Latency and Crackling while Bypassing/Unmuting

Hi, I'm relatively new to Reaper coming from Studio One and Pro Tools. So far I really like this DAW but I have some issues when I'm bypassing plugins and unmuting tracks. There is always strong latency and loud crackling involved when I do that. This also occures and sometimes Reaper actually crashes when I change the timeline selection while playing in loop-mode. I also found out that if I deactivate "Anticipative FX-processing" it becomes a total mess with lots of latency, delays and crackling, even at high buffersizes(from 1024 up) and low CPU-workload(not a single core even reaches more than 40%). I use a lot of parallel sends and busses instead of the parent/child-folders(which I'm not really a fan of), could that be the problem? Or is there a setting in Reapers preferences which I've missed? Thanks in advance! Greetings Patrick

Hi, just a guess, but the crackling from unmuting tracks may be solved / reduced by unticking Options -> Preferences -> Do not process muted tracks (trading for CPU consumption though).

Thanks! Unchecking the "Do not process muted tracks"-option did definitely solve my muting/unmuting-issue! :-) Is there a similar option for the "bypass"-button on plugins?

I've found a thread from 2014 where the same issue has been stated: Does anybody know if this has been fixed in some way yet?

To my knowledge there is no way to turn the plugin bypass switches into workable buttons like the mute button. You'll need to automate a different parameter or just split the track into two tracks - one with, one without - and edit the audio items accordingly.

Hmmm, too bad... I don't see the point in having the bypass-button turning off the plugin and the latency-compensation while we can make the plugin "Offline" anyway if we want to... Maybe a smart guy can change this in a ReaScript?

Here's a script for what can be called "soft bypass" for the currently selected effect. With a midi controller the dry/wet knob can be adjusted. I use a button that toggles it from 0 to 100%, making it into an on/off behavior. No more glitches on latency inducing fx this way. Generously scripted by spk77. (consider supporting our scripters if you get a lot of use from their work :)

You mentioned not using folders. Richie in this thread found that Reaper is more cpu efficient when using folders instead of routing to create busses:
